Pregnenolone and Anti Aging--Your Brain and You

In addition to being a hormone in its own right, pregnenolone is a precursor to other hormones.  Pregnenolone functions as a memory enhancer and cellular repairer—particularly of brain and nerve tissues.  Pregnenolone also protects cerebral function and protects against neuronal damage during injury.  Pregnenolone is depleted when the body is fatigued.  Administration of pregnenolone helps the body deal with fatigue and can even reverse fatigue.  There is speculation that it can help with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Studies with contact sports have shown that pre-administration and follow up administration through the post-injury period can reduce the incidence of concussive and post-concussive syndromes in the head injured sport participant.

There are no known contraindications for pregnenolone HRT.  Bioidentical pregnenolone should be given in a micronized, sustained release formulation for best absorption and coverage.

There is no specific risk to taking pregnenolone.  The standard dose in bioidentical HRT is 100mg a day on an empty stomach.  In the past, doses four and five times today’s 100 mg pregnenolone have been used to help rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and scleroderma, and was very well tolerated at those high doses.  In studies of up to 750 mg daily, there was less than a 1% incidence of headache, bloating, menstrual irregularity, heart burn and a sense of agitation or sedation.
